Genesis Design California: Where Automotive Luxury’s Future Takes Shape
I was granted exclusive access to the new Genesis Design California facility in El Segundo, and what I experienced confirmed something we’ve known for decades: Southern California isn’t just where automotive trends are born—it’s where the future of car design is defined.

The Space That Breathes Creativity

The first thing that strikes you upon entering the 80,000-square-foot studio isn’t the tools or technology, it’s the space itself. The building’s sheer amplitude creates an atmosphere where ideas can breathe, expand, and fill the space with their own aura. This isn’t accidental. This studio is designed to place visitors—and more importantly, designers—in a meditative state of mind, distinct from the outside world.

The restrained yet warm aesthetic of Genesis Design California promotes a sense of calm and focus. Throughout the space, palpable serenity prevails, reflecting the brand’s Korean design philosophy, ingeniously fused with Southern California’s relaxed creativity. It’s Korean minimalism meeting SoCal soul.

The Philosophy: Less is More (But Better)

Jaeho Oh, head of Genesis Interior Design, embodies this philosophy. For him, choosing automotive interior design was quite simple he was captivated by the “whole different world of creativity” found in the intricate details within the cabin, which quickly fueled his desire to make a mark in the industry.

Now he faces the ongoing challenge of integrating the best technologies into Genesis car models while maintaining a layout that’s simple and refined, featuring just the right amount of analog buttons the defining hallmarks of Genesis interiors.

This philosophy is convenient in an era where many manufacturers are replacing physical control with touchscreens. Genesis understands something fundamental: luxury isn’t just technology, it’s the tactile experience, the satisfaction of turning a perfectly calibrated knob, pressing a button with precisely the right weight. And let’s not forget the demographics as well. Luxury vehicle owners today tend to be a bit older, and while they embrace technology, they still appreciate the proven analog controls.

Why El Segundo, Why Now

The location isn’t accidental. Southern California, and specifically this area, is the epicenter of American car culture. From land speed records to hot rods, from Fast and Furious to the EV revolution, it all starts here.

The opening of Genesis Design California reaffirms that LA is the place where the automotive future evolves. It also attracts world-class talent to the city, reinforcing our position as a global hub for automotive design.

The studio houses 45 team members and complements existing studios in Seoul and Frankfurt, Germany. Together, the three teams enable a 24-hour interconnected and collaborative global work process. However, beyond logistics, this studio represents a commitment to designing specifically for North American tastes and trends.

The American Market: More Demanding, More Sophisticated

As explained during my visit, the American market differs significantly from the global market. The customer is increasingly demanding in terms of technology and premium interiors. American buyers expect innovation without sacrificing functionality. They want the latest in connectivity, but not at the expense of usability.

Genesis is responding to these demands with an approach that honors both Korean heritage and American expectations. The studio will drive a broad spectrum of creative work, from production and advanced automotive projects to explorations in air mobility, robotics, and cutting-edge CMF (colors, materials, and finishes) trend research.

What I Can’t Tell You (But You Should Know)

During my visit, I saw shapes and colors that were frankly breathtaking. But everything is top secret—as it should be in a cutting-edge design studio. What I can say is this: trust me, what’s coming is impressive.

The studio features specialized areas rarely found together: a clay modeling and 3D printing workshop, a digital design lab, a studio for colors, materials, and finishes, and a library for discussion, research, and reflection, featuring a modern tea platform inspired by the brand’s distinctly Korean heritage.

There are private spaces enclosed in soft acoustic felt for a calming experience, outdoor spaces inspired by traditional Korean gardens, and an upper-level patio that can accommodate various uses, such as events and dining.

Genesis: Luxury Redefined for a New Generation

In just 10 years since becoming an independent brand in 2015, Genesis has achieved something remarkable: it’s on par with Europe’s best in terms of exterior and interior design. And the quality is immediately apparent the moment you step inside the car.

However, here’s the smart part: Genesis offers matching packages for a bit less money than the established German brands. This isn’t a discount strategy—it’s a market capture strategy designed for a younger generation that understands price shouldn’t be the sole reflection of exclusivity.

Millennial and Gen Z buyers are questioning why they should pay $10,000 more for a badge when quality, technology, and design are comparable. Genesis is answering that question before it’s even asked.

The Future is Designed Here

José Muñoz, president and CEO of Genesis, expressed it perfectly: “Genesis Design California embeds our team directly in the U.S. market, ensuring we design vehicles that truly resonate with North American customers.”

After my visit, I believe they’re delivering on that promise. The studio isn’t just a workspace—it’s a statement of intent. Genesis isn’t here to compete with the Germans by following their rules. They’re redefining what automotive luxury means for a new generation of buyers who value substance over status symbols.

And they’re doing it from the right place: Southern California, where the automotive future has always taken shape first.
