A Cinematic Getaway

A Magical Escape to Catalina Island

This past Saturday, September 27, we embarked on a truly cinematic adventure to Catalina Island, made possible by the generous invitation of the Catalina Film Festival organizers — who kindly provided our transportation aboard the Catalina Express.

Founded in 1981 by Doug Bombard, his son Greg, and colleague Tom Rutter, Catalina Express has transported more than 33 million passengers across the 22 miles separating the Southern California coast from this island paradise.

With daily departures from San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point, and a travel time of just about one hour, the Catalina Express makes this getaway quick, comfortable, and unforgettable — a must-try for anyone planning their next LA adventure.

Arriving in Avalon: Badges, Interviews & Cinema Magic

Our ferry docked at 10:50 a.m. in Avalon Harbor, a postcard-perfect seaside town with a charm all its own. Once we stepped onto solid ground, we set out to collect our press credentials, warmly greeted by the festival team after a short walk through town.

From there, the day unfolded in true Hollywood style. We explored the festival’s venues, conducted interviews with filmmakers, actors, volunteers, and other passionate lovers of cinema. The air buzzed with creativity — each conversation a reminder of the dedication behind the Catalina Film Festival, one of the most inspiring LA events of the year.

Lunch with Heart: The M Restaurant & Events

By midday, our excitement turned into appetite. Following a local’s recommendation, we visited The M Restaurant & Events at 205 Crescent Avenue.

There, a friendly Mexican father-and-son duo welcomed us with warm smiles and attentive service. Our lunch — a juicy rib-eye steak with salad, two refreshing non-alcoholic beers, and a delicious cheesecake — was a feast for both body and soul. Though the prices leaned upscale, the quality, hospitality, and flavor made every bite worthwhile.

The Red Carpet at the Historic Avalon Theatre

Recharged and inspired, we continued our journey to the legendary Avalon Theatre, a 1,200-seat architectural gem known as the world’s first sound cinema.

At 4:00 p.m., the red carpet rolled out, and the festival came alive with glamour, excitement, and dreams in motion. What truly stood out wasn’t just the venue’s grandeur, but the passion of the artists — filmmakers, producers, directors, actors, and actresses — each one carrying stories born from courage and love for the art of film.

Many had traveled great distances, investing their hearts and resources to share their vision with the world. Watching them step onto the red carpet was a beautiful reminder: cinema transforms lives — both for the storytellers and the audiences who feel seen through their work.

This experience became more than a report; it became a tribute to creators who dare to dream, tell stories, and move us all through the power of film.

A Tribute to the Dreamers

This article is dedicated to every filmmaker who believes in the power of storytelling. Whether it’s a debut short film made on a tight budget or a polished independent feature, each project represents courage, creativity, and perseverance.

As one producer told us:

“It’s not just about making movies; it’s about changing lives — yours, and those who feel seen through your story.”

To all of them: thank you — for inspiring, for creating, and for never giving up. You embody the Best of LA’s creative spirit and remind us why art matters.

An Unexpected Twist: Batteries, Music & Reflection

Not every moment goes according to plan. Just as I prepared to capture more footage, my iPhone 16 Pro began to die — and my charger refused to cooperate.

Alone on the island, I decided to put down the camera and simply explore Avalon. I wandered through local shops, listened to street musicians, and let the rhythm of island life guide me.

That spontaneous pause became a poetic finale — a gentle reminder that sometimes, the best memories come when we stop documenting and start living.

The Journey Home: Until Next Time, Catalina

At 9:50 p.m., I boarded the ferry back to Long Beach, heart full and spirit renewed. It had been a long day, but one filled with unforgettable moments — a perfect blend of cinema, culture, and coastal beauty.

If you’ve been searching for your next LA getaway, look no further than Catalina Island. Whether you’re drawn by its festivals, its food, or simply its peaceful shores, this is one destination that truly deserves a spot on your Discover LA list.

Special thanks to JP Petrini (Catalina Film PR) for the gracious invitation and hospitality.
